Messi, Pele and Neymar at the UEFA awards.(http://www.elitedaily.com/) |
Brazilian legend Pele, has once again dismissed claims that Barcelona FC player, Lionel Messi, is the greatest player in modern football. On Wednesday, Pele minimised Messi, saying that his countryman Neymar is better than Messi. Pele however, said " there's always this Maradona comparison, saying that he's better than Pele. Now some are saying that Messi is better than Pele. Well, he has to be better than Neymar first, which he isn't yet." Some Pele supporters including him have insisted that Messi would have to win the World Cup to be included in the conversation of the greatest football players of all time.
Who is the best
However, Messi has broken almost all of the football records globally and has recieved the best player award for three consecutive years. The humble Argentine has not even once responded negatively to Pele's allegations but has instead proved himself on the pitch. Scoring more than fifty goals this season, Lionel Messi has remained in top form since getting an automatic selection in the Barcelona squad five years ago. Though one cannot deny that Neymay is also a good player but he is still young and has to gain experience.
Will Neymar join Barcelona
Rumours have circled around the global football community that Neymar will transfer to Barcelona next season. Having both Neymar and Messi pairing up front would be a football heaven for Barcelona or rather football itself. While Pele is going around stating that Neymar is the better than Messi, it could negatively impact the team's chemistry. Also, from a public relations point of view, Pele should rather encourage and influence both players to develop a friendship rather than making individual comparison, as there is a possibility of the players teaming up.
Lionel Messi's goal record for Barcelona in the past five years
- 2007/2008 Season 16 goals
- 2008/2009 Season 38 goals
- 2009/2010 Season 47 goals
- 2010/2011 Season 53 goals
- 2011/2012 Season 61 goals as yet
Any football supporter knows that Messi is the k\King of Football judging by the goal records he has so far.I think Pele does not want to accept that currently in Brazil there has'nt been a Soccer star yet who is similar to Messi, for him to say that Neymar is best he is just consolidating himself because Neymar is from Brazil.
ReplyDeleteAt the end both players should not let peoples opinions and views disrupt their perfomances
haaai @lucky no i disagree messi isnt the king of football, just that he always get support from his teammates xavi and in iniesta, without them he is nothing. and ja u can compare neymar with messi, that boy is so marvelous to watch
ReplyDeleteWe should not look at individuals opinion and think very wide, If Messi and Neymar are to be judged that must be done by the public; football aspects; and analyst
ReplyDeleteThis is a different story compared to this two, looking on the leagues they are playing in and the teams they are playing for.Messi has achieved more things than Neymar and so far they are both great players.
ReplyDeletei think pele shouldn't even persist with his poor comparisons, both neymar and messi are footballers, talented footballers,so i don't see the point why they should be compared to one another.they are probably going to be teammates next season, shouldn't he be wondering about the combination they are going to initiate?
ReplyDeletePersonally always maintain that Messi is the best dribbler of the ball but overall Ronaldo is the epitome of many aspects of the game. Well Neymar has still got a long way to go to prove himself does he even have a World Cup experience to start with?. As far as the 60's and beyond is concerned, all we ever hear about is "THE GREAT PELE" but gents just take time into the Deutch legend of that time too JOHANN CRUYFF WOW WOW WOW!!
ReplyDeleteMessi cannot be hailed as king of football yet as he still has to win the World Cup with Argentina
ReplyDeleteThemba its right for supporters to raise their opinions on the two players as supporters are part of football
ReplyDeleteVongani you have a point, we'll see if Neymar meets Pele's expectations next season if he transfers to Barca
ReplyDeleteSeth, but Ronaldo has kept an under par performance in big games, he has failed to rise to the occassion on big days which may be why Pele is not even mentioning him among the greats
ReplyDeleteYou dont win the world cup alone but with your team mates. They cannot judge Messi by saying he has not won the world cup.i am convinced that Messi is they greatest pleyer at the moment.
